Red Sea / Gulf of Aden Update
The security situation in the Red Sea and surrounding areas remains unstable. All major carriers have suspended transit through the Red Sea and Suez Canal, rerouting vessels via the Cape of Good Hope in Africa. Consequently, transit times for these routes continue to be extended.
Rates in the impacted lanes are forecasted to remain at increased levels, but spot rates may now be leveling off. While new contract rates will be higher, it is not expected these will reach pandemic-era highs.
Disruption of regular vessel schedules may result in port congestion and equipment shortages. In the US, a marked shift from East Coast to West Coast ports is likely. Ocean Carriers must actively work on recalibrating their networks, including changing call ports and adjusting transshipping hubs to adapt to the present environment.
