Sydney Port Congestion and Empty Container Park issues

The port of Sydney is currently experiencing severe port congestion. The congestion was caused by multiple factors including industrial actions and bad weather. As a result, the congestion has caused significant vessel delays, Sydney port omissions and change of vessel rotations.

Due to the congestion most shipping lines have introduced a Sydney Port Congestion surcharge of USD 280-350 per TEU for any cargo to/from Sydney. Unfortunately, this surcharge also means that LCL rates will increase by USD 13 w/m for cargo to/from Sydney. The congestion charge is billed to the consignee in Australia. The ongoing issues have prompted Maersk to temporarily cease accepting any bookings to Sydney until October 1st .

On top of the port congestion Sydney is also currently facing the problem that their empty container depots have reached their capacities and some have closed their doors for returning empty containers. It is estimated that there is currently an imbalance of approx. 30,000 TEU in Sydney. Under normal circumstances these containers would have been re-used/ repositioned to Asia. However, shipping lines have not been able to move out enough empties to alleviate the congestion. Because of these issues many importers are currently facing extra detention charges as their transport companies are unable to return containers in a timely manner. It is anticipated that shipping lines will have some export vessels dedicated to reposition empty containers over the coming weeks which will hopefully solve this problem.
