Breaking Alert

8/30/2016

Dear Valued Customer:

Subject:  Hurricane Watch for the Big Island

A hurricane watch has been issued for the Big Island. It's too soon to forecast the intensity, track, and impact of the hurricane; however, the U.S. Coast Guard has already stated that the Ports of Hilo and Kawaihae will be closed today at 8:00 p.m.

Following closely behind Hurricane Madeline is Hurricane Lester, which has now reached Category 4 intensity. Hurricane Lester was located nearly 1,400 miles west of the southern tip of Baja California late this morning. It is moving west, and forecasted to continue doing so for the next several days before tracking to the west-northwest this weekend. This track may bring Lester near the Hawaiian Islands by Labor Day weekend. Lester may weaken, but it is too soon to be certain about the specifics of wind and rain intensity. Changes in the forecast track and intensity could have important ramifications on impacts.
